Abstract

La théorie de la fausse conscience, qui considère que la domination exercée sur la volonté de différentes personnes peut expliquer les actions irrationnelles qu’elles accomplissent, est largement répandue (elle est utilisée bien au-delà des cercles intellectuels) et prestigieuse (aussi bien politiquement qu’intellectuellement). Elle demeure néanmoins peu discutée. Lorsqu’elle est examinée, c’est surtout depuis une perspective étroitement épistémique. En m’appuyant sur des travaux entrepris par Raymond Boudon (1934-2013), j’esquisse ici une description pragmatiste des usages que permet cette théorie, des contextes de ces usages et des conséquences de ces usages dans ces contextes. Je porte une attention particulière à un cas précis : l’explication, dans le contexte québécois d’aujourd’hui, du port du voile par les musulmanes. L’examen de cet usage de la théorie de la fausse conscience permet de mettre pleinement en lumière les conséquences potentiellement funestes de cette dernière.
