Dynamic Spreading and Transport of Liquid Droplets over Asymmetric Sawtooth Surface Structures

Abstract
This paper presents how the asymmetric surface microstructures affect dynamic spreading and induce droplets to move directionally. For the dynamic spreading, the growth of the spreading radius in each direction of the asymmetric sawtooth structure was investigated experimentally. The effect of the surface geometry on each wetting direction was quantitatively evaluated from the energy dissipation by the difference between the dynamic contact angle and the static contact angle which continue to change locally and dynamically on the structure surface during wetting process. Furthermore, the characteristics of droplet transport driven by vibration of the substrate were evaluated from the imbalance of wetting resistance in each direction due to the surface geometry.
