Dans notre article, nous montrons que l’identité religieuse ne devrait pas nécessairement être appréhendée par le concept de converti mais plutôt comme une identité personnelle formée dans le cadre d’un style de vie. À travers l’étude des pratiquants bouddhistes en France et en République tchèque nous analysons les discours sur l’engagement religieux qui accentuent les sentiments intérieurs. De cette manière, différentes dimensions de l’engagement bouddhiste comme la pratique religieuse, le collectif, l’enseignement et la symbolique bouddhistes sont recadrés comme expression authentique de la subjectivité des pratiquants bouddhistes, se conformant au primat de l’authenticité. Nous estimons que cette authenticité est socialement construite au travers d’interactions sociales et par des processus sociaux macrosociologiques, dont les rapports sociaux de classe et l’éthos consumériste.
