Abstract

With increasing means of computer interaction, the mobility impaired require additional accessibility methods to have the same communication abilities as other users, but have limited, expensive and bulky options. Current physical and soft keyboards also suffer from design flaws that cause strain or pain to these individuals. Wearables have been shown to be able to reduce muscle fatigue while increasing productivity. Therefore, a one-handed glove that uses inexpensive sensors and can communicate via Bluetooth may be an effective solution for those with a low mobility range. A smart arrangement of sensors including, finger buttons, contacts and a joystick, have been carefully chosen to balance input efficiency, cost, freedom of full computer use and natural hand placement for a keyboard-and-mouse-enabled glove. The paper describes how the proposed wearable allows the ease of everyday computer and smartphone work to be accessible to individuals who have impairments that prohibit them to use computers with their intended ease.
