Abstract Scaling models for preferential choice data serve the dual purpose to summarize choice data and to facilitate the forecasting of choices by decision makers facing possibly new or different variants of the choice options. The summary representation obtained by scaling methods can provide useful information for identifying both option characteristics that influence choice and systematic sources of individual differences in the evaluation of these option characteristics. Many scaling models are based on Thurstone's random‐utility approach and allow the analysis of different types of both revealed and stated choice data.
