Abstract
[Extract] Today, community nurses and most community workers throughout the world base their practice on the concepts of partnership, collaboration and empowerment. Together with others in their communities, they commit themselves to the attainment of 'health for all'. 'Health for all' was identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1978 as a primary aim (Ottawa Charter for Health, 1986, p.1). The goal of health for all will be achieved when the human rights of all - especially women, children, and those most marginalised and vulnerable - are promoted and protected. Community nurses participate in the achievement of WHO's directives through their efforts in supporting social justice and equity for all. Experienced community nurses understand that any health-promotion efforts must be based within the broader socioeconomic contexts of people's local, regional and even global issues and concerns.
