Depuis les programmes d’ajustements structurels, le marché occupe une place centrale dans les politiques de développement promues en Afrique subsaharienne. Mais le marché de l’économie politique occidentale y existe-t-il ? Si la réponse est négative comme le montre l’examen critique des conceptions smithienne, hayékienne et walrasienne du marché sous contrainte à la fois des spécificités anthropologique, historique et économique de l’histoire subsaharienne et d’une enquête de terrain à Yaoundé et à Douala au Cameroun, quels types de marchés trouve-t-on en Afrique subsaharienne ? L’article indique qu’il s’agit très souvent de marchés populaires. Il en donne les caractéristiques et les implications en matière de développement.
