Cet article traite de la problématique engendrée par le changement du statut des enregistrements ethnomusicologiques du musée national des Arts et Traditions populaires entrés comme « collections » inscrites à l’inventaire du musée et requalifiées en « archives scientifiques » suite à leur versement aux Archives nationales en 2013. L’autrice explique ce qui a justifié l’attribution de ce statut d’objet dans le contexte de la construction du musée-laboratoire alors qu’émerge dans les années 1930 une nouvelle discipline, l’ethnologie de la France, dont le musée se veut être le fer de lance. À travers l’exemple de ces données sonores (pour utiliser un terme neutre) dont la constitution est le fondement de la discipline née en France dans les musées, il est question d’évoquer les enjeux dont ils sont l’objet et d’aborder le processus patrimonial qui les transforme en « témoins culturels immatériels ».
