Abstract
The article gives a brief overview of the literary situation in Germany of 1919-1934. The Weimar Republic is one of the most difficult periods in German historiography. Many historians interpret it just as a transitional period to Nazi dictatorship. However, this era is an important period in the history of modern Germany, especially in the sphere of culture and art that is primarily associated with the development of democratic freedoms. German intellectuals, especially those who held leftist political views, had long dreamed of the possibility of direct involvement in the political events and affairs of the state. Remarque took almost no part in the political life of the Weimar Republic and distanced himself in his work from value judgments about what was happening in the country, but political and economic turmoil had had a direct influence on his work.
