Gabriel Arsenault vise dans cet ouvrage à expliciter les spécificités du modèle de développement de l'économie sociale au Québec, en se concentrant sur le tournant des années 1990.Cet "exceptionnalisme québécois" dans le contexte nord-américain gagnerait à être éclairé par le rapport de force politique entre syndicats, corporations professionnelles, organisations communautaires, partis politiques et autres acteurs de la société civile.Ainsi, l'auteur propose une analyse de la reconnaissance, du développement et de l'institutionnalisation du champ de l'économie sociale selon une perspective politique, comme le titre de l'ouvrage l'indique.
