Cet article aborde les sites géographiques dont la modification ou la sauvegarde a été provoquée par les lecteurs d’une œuvre littéraire. Il s’intéresse au cas particulier des sites géographiques de la ville d’Illiers-Combray, dont la sauvegarde ou la modification a été entraînée par l’attitude des lecteurs de Marcel Proust. Jardins, bâtiments, rues, il s’agit d’étudier quels sites géographiques, dans la commune, portent la trace de l’action des lecteurs d’À la recherche du temps perdu. L’article s’attarde également sur le rôle des lecteurs de Proust dans le changement de nom de la commune en 1971, qui, d’Illiers, devient Illiers-Combray. On y aborde donc, dans un premier temps, l’intervention des lecteurs dans les décisions municipales, muséales, patrimoniales. Il s’agit ainsi de voir comment l’œuvre littéraire peut mener à la publication de textes d’autres natures : arrêtés ou guides touristiques, par exemple. Dans un second temps, l’article s’attache à répondre à la question suivante : peut-on établir un lien entre ce que le lecteur a lu et ce qu’il fait de ce qu’il a lu ? Y’a-t-il corrélation entre contenu de l’œuvre et action des lecteurs ?
