Modeling tsunami interaction with coastal communities is a key factor in understanding how tsunamis impact the design of coastal protection structures and buildings within the community. This chapter presents a review of literature and current research for designing and protecting coastal communities to withstand tsunami events. We present an assessment of different coastal protection methods and their advantages and disadvantages, and debris and tsunami impact forces on structures should the coastal protection not be sufficient, and a review of the current Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) guidelines compared with modeled forces.
