Abstract
The study examined the effects of Body image dissatisfaction and perceived media pressure on alexithymia and its dimensions. An incidental sample of 332 female students having the age range of 17-23 years was selected. The tools used for the study included Body Shape Questionnaire(BSQ-34) by Cooper,Taylor, Cooper & Fairburn (1987); Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale-3 (SATAQ-3) by Thompson et al., (2004); Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) by Bagby et al., (1994). A 2x2 factorial design was applied for data analysis and the results revealed that body image dissatisfaction had a significant main effect on two dimensions of alexithymia namely difficulty in Identifying feelings (TAS-DIF) and difficulty in Describing feelings (TAS-DDF). Media pressure was found to produce significant main effect on one of the dimensions of alexithymia i.e., difficulty identifying feelings (TAS-DIF). Interaction of both the independent variables was found to be significant only for one dimension of alexithymia i.e., on externally oriented thinking (TAS-EOT).
