Avec La semaine sainte (1958), Louis Aragon remonte jusqu’en 1815 pour trouver un contexte propice à la mise en roman d’une réflexion portant sur le sens de l’histoire et l’engagement. Au coeur de la désorientation politique du début des Cent-Jours, Théodore Géricault est le personnage central d’une fable qui fait la part belle aux anciens héros de l’Empire, désormais confondus avec les grands acteurs de la Maison du Roi en fuite. Pour les dépeindre, Aragon s’abreuve notamment aux sources de premier ordre que constituent leurs Mémoires, matière qui jouera pour beaucoup dans la genèse du roman réaliste français. Cette documentation, qui éclaire la représentation d’un moment charnière de l’histoire politique et littéraire française, n’est pas sans conséquence sur la poétique du roman, fortement influencée par la narration des mémorialistes, au point où en émerge une voix auctoriale qui en semble l’écho.
