Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This chapter identifies transcultural views of church members that assist in the construction of language policies. It discusses how church members negotiate their Japanese cultural identities and the normative Canadian culture in which they live. The chapter describes their perceptions about English proficiency in terms of differences between generations, beliefs about English proficiencies, and beliefs about being bilingual. Just as brands are personified when companies and brands are viewed as if they are people, the same could be true with church communities in terms of their cultural and linguistic characteristics. Echoing the negative sentiments about English in Japanese ethnic churches from church members, often from the older generation, it is perhaps not surprising that they tend to have negative perceptions concerning their abilities to use English in Canadian society. River Japanese Church is the oldest, which means it has been impacted the most by second and third generations who have grown up in Canada.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
