途上国において導入されつつある,都市ごみ (MSW) の選別と資源化を行い,埋立ごみを削減する技術である機械的・生物的処理 (MBT) について,東南アジアで稼働する施設のうちタイの 2 つの施設を紹介した上で,これら施設をモデルケースとして,運用期間全体の費用便益を分析した。これら MBT 施設では,都市ごみに含まれる水分を低減させるため,天日乾燥または生物発酵熱を利用したバイオドライ工程が取り入れられており,産物は工業用の燃料として利用されていた。MBT 施設の 20 年間の運用により,RDF 製造工程の費用と残渣処分の費用が小さいことが費用便益比 (CBR) に大きく影響していた。
