Abstract
En 2000, le Québec a déconfessionnalisé son système scolaire. Mais, du même souffle, il a demandé aux écoles de « favoriser le cheminement spirituel des élèves » (LIP, art 36). Pour les soutenir dans cette obligation, il a créé la profession en animation à la vie spirituelle et à l’engagement communautaire (AVSEC) (MEQ, 2000). Mais, intervenir sur le cheminement spirituel des élèves dans le respect de leur liberté de conscience et de religion est tout un défi pour ce nouveau service. Après un bref survol du contexte historique et des enjeux soulevés par diverses recherches et enquêtes sur le sujet, nous explorons les résultats de deux démarches entreprises auprès d’AVSEC pour aider à mieux définir le concept de « vie spirituelle ». Il ressort qu’une approche phénoménologique permet d’intervenir sur la vie spirituelle indépendamment des croyances religieuses ou d’autres provenances qui la fondent. Cela permet aussi de différencier vie spirituelle et spiritualité.
