Abstract
The name Thomas of Britain suggests this late twelfth‐century poet's affiliation with the Celtic cultures of Great Britain or Brittany; he wrote hisTristranin Anglo‐Norman, and it was influential within England and on the Continent. Thomas and his Tristran ponder dialectically the joyous and destructive aspects of the love that Tristran and Iseut undergo; the romance's conclusion is tragic. Thomas names himself in the fragments that we have left of his poem, and he asserts that he follows Breri in telling the authentic story, unlike other contemporary tale‐tellers who relate improbable episodes.
