Abstract
This chapter deals with nosocomial and multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections found in dogs and cats. In veterinary medicine, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, surgical site infections, bloodstream infections, and gastrointestinal disease (infectious diarrhea) are likely to be the most common presentations for hospital-associated infections (HAIs). The pathogens of concern are Staphylococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., Salmonella spp., Acinetobacter spp., and Pseudomonas spp. The key methods to manage MDR infections and reduce the risk of HAIs include reducing the prevalence of MDR organisms in patients, reducing within-hospital exposure, and prompt recognition and response. In animals, decolonization therapy for multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) has not been shown to be effective and unsuccessful attempts result in promotion of further resistance. In order to protect other patients and clinic staff, attention to patient housing and animal flow is important in managing patients with MDROs.
