Abstract
This chapter deals with canine myocardial diseases, and focuses on dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). It discusses the etiology/pathophysiology, epidemiology, signalment, history and clinical signs, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of canine myocardial diseases. The chapter provides information on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. DCM occurs predominantly in middle-aged to older, medium- to large-breed dogs, and its diagnosis involves a minimum of an echocardiogram and electrocardiogram. Goals of therapy in preclinical cases include slowing systolic dysfunction, preventing ventricular remodeling and disease progression, and delaying congestive heart failure or sudden death. ARVC is seen most commonly in the boxer, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is reported in dogs but is rare. Holter recording is the most valuable diagnostic tool for ARVC. For immediate treatment of ventricular tachycardia or ventricular arrhythmia causing weakness or collapse, intravenous lidocaine is recommended. The most common and effective oral antiarrhythmics are sotalol, mexiletine, or a combination of the two in more refractory cases.
