Abstract
Helen Wise-Molony (1858-1934) was a writer, poet and an activist in the American Suffragist Movement. In 1886 she published a novella, “True Love Falters Not” in the American Jews' Annual. It is a story of a competent Jewish man, Robert Stern, who is about to marry a young, placid and beautiful Jewish maiden, Emily Heavenrich. Emily is depicted in accordance with the long-existent literary stereotype of the obedient Jewish daughter. The male protagonist, Robert Stern, is a more interesting figure. Robert's physical prowess and muscularity are emphasized and repeated throughout the tale. Notably, Helen Wise-Molony published her novella twelve-years prior to Max Nordau's coining the term the muscular foreshadowing the growing popularity of activities and propaganda aimed at producing a physically trained Jew, in lieu of the nervous one.
