 RESUMO: Com o passar dos anos, a sociedade tem evoluído e, com isso, os consumidores passaram a ser mais exigentes quanto à sua alimentação. A consciência de que a escolha dos alimentos vai muito além da disponibilidade, agora a preocupação não é somente com a disponibilidade do alimento, mas também com a sua qualidade. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar o nível de conhecimento dos consumidores de produtos de origem animal (POA) com relação ao manejo em condições de bem-estar. A pesquisa foi conduzida por meio de aplicação de questionários nos arredores de supermercados, açougues, feiras, incluindo um público de diferentes faixas etárias, renda mensal e nível de escolaridade. Foram aplicados 384 questionários no município de Niterói, localizado no estado do Rio de Janeiro. O questionário continha perguntas relacionadas com o bem-estar animal e a disposição em consumir produtos que respeitem esses critérios. Dentre os entrevistados, notou-se que 46% dos entrevistados desconhece o modo de criação dos animais de produção, porém 62,3% dos entrevistados mostraram-se favoráveis em pagar a mais para garantir condições de bem-estar aos animais. Conclui-se que, apesar de possuir uma parcela considerável de desconhecimento, a população demonstrou interesse em produtos que garantam o bem-estar dos animais de produção.

 CONSUMERS PERCEPTION ABOUT WELFARE OF LIVESTOCK IN NITERÓI, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
 
 ABSTRACT: Over the years the society has evolved and with that consumers have become more demanding about their food. The awareness that the choice of food goes far beyond availability, now the concern is with food quality. The present study aims at the analysis of knowledge from animal products consumers. The study was conducted through the application of questionnaires around supermarkets, butchers, green-market, and it was included people from different ages, monthly income and level of study. It was applied 384 questionnaires into the county of Niteroi, located in Rio de Janeiro city. The questionnaire had questions related to animal welfare and the public's concern to consume products that are of reliable origin. The collected data revealed that 46% of the people that was interviewed do not have knowledge about the origin of animal breeding, in other hand, 62.3% of interviewed, shown favorable concern into pay more to have a eco-friendly product. In conclusion, despite of a considerable part of the population do not have knowledge about animal breeding, the population has shown an interest in products that guarantee the welfare of production animals
