Abstract
Young adulthood is a time often perceived as the prime stage of life when one is free from both the chains of adolescence and the stigmas that come with more advanced age. This chapter explores social-emotional development for young adults as it relates to the prolific questions of: Who am I? What do I value? And what do I want to accomplish? The chapter presents a case study of Ivan, a 20-year-old Native American male activist who has participated in a recent protest in Canada. Erik Erikson noted that intimacy only promotes healthy relationships when individuals share other aspects of self, rather than just focusing on the sexual intimacy and ego fulfilment. Relational cultural theory is a feminist theory that counters the separateness of ideological self, presented in theories like Erikson's intimacy versus isolation.
