Abstract
En s’appuyant sur les trois grandes tendances qui informent les romans de Poulin (l’américanité, la francité et la franco-américanité), cet article vise à mettre en lumière comment la pratique de la série et du cycle romanesques a guidé l’écrivain dans la construction de son oeuvre. Cette sérialité, qui est caractérisée par le paradoxe résidant entre l’ambition secrète du grand roman et la modestie apparente du discours romanesque, a accompagné l’élaboration de ce qu’on a appelé le cycle de Jack Waterman, qui regroupe les romans publiés dans le sillage de Volkswagen Blues . Toutes ces oeuvres expriment bien les apories qui sont constitutives du grand roman américain et plus largement encore franco-américain.
