Si on reconnaît mieux aujourd’hui l’indéniable contribution d’Arthur Buies à la littérature québécoise, jusqu’à le considérer comme « le meilleur écrivain du xix e siècle », il n’en a pas toujours été ainsi, son oeuvre ayant suscité toutes sortes de réactions négatives jusque dans les années soixante. Dissimulée derrière le personnage de l’anticlérical et du pamphlétaire, s’y révèle — en particulier dams les Lettres sur le Canada et La Lanterne — une pensée sur la nature et la condition humaines qui mérite d’être étudiée précisément dans l’angle qui a fait de Buies un maudit. En travaillant sans relâche à circonscrire un certain symptôme collectif, Buies engage le lecteur à reconnaître les effets d’un « mal » qui déborde le cadre de son époque et, comme le font d’autres écrivains et penseurs avec lesquels il dialogue, à considérer la littérature comme le lieu de la transmission d’un savoir à la fois dérangeant et essentiel.
