L’étude s’intéresse aux ruines dans le roman 14 de Jean Echenoz (Minuit, 2012). Quels vestiges la Grande Guerre laisse-t-elle dans l’oeuvre singulière de l’écrivain ? Si la ruine des Lumières ou du romantisme se présentait sur un mode élégiaque, noble et sublime, elle ne possède plus aujourd’hui le lustre triomphant des siècles passés. On verra comment, dans 14 , elle se place résolument sous le signe du prosaïque, du minuscule, voire du rebut. On analysera ainsi le sens et les modalités de cet effritement mémoriel qui se double malgré tout d’un retour de « survivances », au sens où l’entendait Abby Warburg. Au-delà de 14 , nous montrerons que ce motif innerve toute l’oeuvre de l’écrivain, symptôme d’une condition socio-économique et reflet d’une réflexion ontologique. La ruine constitue en ce sens un paradigme heuristique extrêmement fécond.
