Faut-il vraiment, pour traduire la poésie, être soi-même poète ? Cette injonction étant aussi ancienne que rarement argumentée, on cherchera ici à la resituer dans son contexte critique et historique. Compilant les positions de divers poètes et traducteurs, je montrerai d’abord que cette fausse évidence s’est imposée de l’Antiquité à nos jours. J’examinerai ensuite l’une de mes propres traductions (de Seamus Heaney) pour comprendre ce qui est censé distinguer un traducteur poète d’un non-poète. À la lumière d’un second ensemble de citations, je renverserai enfin l’argument : travaillant sur l’œuvre d’un autre, le poète traducteur ne risque-t-il pas de lui imposer sa propre poétique ?
