Évolution postglaciaire de la sédimentation éolienne au sommet de deux parois rocheuses du nord de la Gaspésie, Québec (Canada)

L'analyse de deux dépôts éoliens de sommet de falaise du nord de la Gaspésie (Québec, Canada) a permis d'en retracer l'évolution postglaciaire en relation avec les changements environnementaux concomitants. Prélevés à même les parois rocheuses situées en contrebas, les sédiments sont remontés sur le plateau sommital par les flux ascendants très puissants engendrés par les vents de tempêtes. Principalement composés de sables grossiers mal triés avec une proportion significative de graviers et de plaquettes pouvant atteindre jusqu'à 193 mm de longueur, ces dépôts éoliens comptent parmi les plus grossiers décrits à ce jour. Au sommet du mont Saint-Pierre (425 m), le début de la sédimentation éolienne vers 13600 ans cal. BP coïncide avec l'installation des premières végétations postglaciaires agissant comme piège sédimentaire. Elle s'est poursuivie suivant un taux de sédimentation relativement constant de l'ordre 0,1 mm/an jusqu'à 2300 cal. BP. Après cette date, le taux de sédimentation a été multiplié par 10 sous l'effet conjugué d'un feu de forêt et peut-être aussi d'une intensification des vents de tempête. À Grande-Vallée, la sédimentation éolienne a été contrôlée par les fluctuations du niveau marin relatif, qui ont alternativement ennoyé ou exondé la paroi rocheuse, faisant ainsi varier l'étendue de la surface exposée à la déflation.
