Abstract
Notre estimé confrère Gaétan Gervais (1944-2018), cofondateur de la Société Charlevoix et titulaire du premier fauteuil, nous a quittés à l’âge de 74 ans le 20 octobre 2018. Il a rejoint nos regrettés collègues Roger Bernard (1944-2000), Fernand Dorais (1928-2003) et René Dionne (1929-2018), qui formaient, avec Fernand Ouellet , aujourd’hui membre émérite, et le signataire de ce mot, l’équipe du volume inaugural de ce collectif en 1995, soit les titulaires des six premiers fauteuils de notre association. Michel Bock a accepté de retoucher la conférence d’ouverture inédite donnée à Sudbury, le 25 mars 2010, au colloque « L’Université Laurentienne : berceau de la culture et de l’identité franco-ontariennes ». Dans sa mise en contexte – « Gaétan Gervais, l’Université Laurentienne et l’Ontario français : l’engagement d’un intellectuel historien » –, livrée sans flagornerie en présence de l’intéressé, Bock montre la place prépondérante qu’a occupée son maître dans le développement du champ historiographique franco-ontarien et, en relisant ses travaux, il cerne le parcours et les convictions de ce chercheur pionnier.
