Abstract
Le « Règlement pour l’enseignement » qu’adoptent les Ursulines de Québec en 1844 propose un modèle éducatif qui résulte d’une dynamique historique complexe. Ce modèle est d’abord l’expression d’une attitude intellectuelle et morale que le xixe siècle hérite du siècle précédent et que la critique universitaire actuelle associe aux « Lumières catholiques ». C’est ainsi que le Règlement illustre un projet éducatif qu’éclaire la science moderne et qui bannit notamment les châtiments corporels. Cette modernisation des pratiques éducatives s’inscrit ensuite dans le contexte de la construction d’un ethos de la respectabilité bourgeoise, dont les principaux emblèmes empruntent largement à la culture de la société curiale d’Ancien Régime et, en particulier, à la rhétorique.
