Alors que les universités contemporaines sont vouées à repenser leur autonomie et leurs missions sociales dans le contexte de la société de la connaissance, cet article revient sur les riches débats philosophiques qui ont entouré la fondation de l’Université de Berlin, au début du dix-neuvième siècle, dans l’idéalisme allemand. Prenant pour fil conducteur les écrits de Fichte sur la philosophie de l’université, il propose de les reconstruire à partir de cinq grands modèles. Le modèle bien connu de la communauté organique isolée, plutôt dominant dans le Plan déductif de 1807, est ainsi complété et complexifié par quatre autres modèles. Pris ensemble, ces modèles permettent de penser à la fois l’autonomie interne et la fonction formatrice de l’université, en l’inscrivant dans le contexte plus large d’une société de l’apprentissage de la liberté.
