Depuis maintenant plusieurs décennies, la prise en compte de savoirs écologiques traditionnels et de valeurs culturelles associées à la nature stimule des modèles de gestion des ressources alternatifs. Dans le cadre d’un projet comparatif mené dans l’Outre-mer français, l’auteure a recueilli les savoirs traditionnels relatifs aux récifs coralliens. À l’issue d’une étude comparative, force a été de constater la difficile identification des traditions maritimes dans plusieurs des sites étudiés, principalement dans les océans Indien et Atlantique. Le présent article s’applique à en comprendre les raisons. En puisant dans l’histoire intellectuelle et coloniale, il interroge la spécificité du traitement réservé à la mer dans ces territoires et découvre les ressorts de ses transformations contemporaines.
