Abstract

PtNi x /C catalysts were synthesized in various solvents by using a polyol method and were then treated with acetic acid. They were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Electro-chemical analysis was carried out by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry to study the activity of these catalysts toward the oxidation of ethanol. Moreover, a commercial PtNi 0.26 /C catalyst was evaluated using the same methods for comparison. A PtNi 0.62 /C(PG) catalyst prepared in propylene glycol was more active toward the oxidation of ethanol than a catalyst prepared in the same way in ethylene glycol and the commercial PtNi 0.26 /C, exhibiting less poisoning by adsorbed CO. Treatment with acetic acid to remove surface Ni further enhanced the activity toward ethanol oxidation. For example, the activity of treated PtNi 0.62 /C(PG) was 11.6 mA mg −1 at 0.27 V while it was 6.7 mA mg −1 for the untreated catalyst.
