Abstract
The indisputability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as First Australians is acknowledged, as is the need for redress, reconciliation and collaboration to improve health outcomes. This chapter presents a chronology of ideas, events and developments that show how occupation treatments of the nineteenth century turned into a new rehabilitation approach called ‘occupational therapy’ in the twentieth century. Occupational therapy delivered by trained occupational therapists had already been recognised as an effective treatment in the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom. The pioneers introduced occupational therapy to the following specialisations by the end of the 1930s: physical rehabilitation, paediatric, psychiatric and acute general medical services. The Australian military decided to appoint only qualified occupational therapists, as in the United States Army. In education, the binary system gathered pace in the 1970s. Multidisciplinary colleges and faculties meant occupational therapy was collaborating and competing with other disciplines for resources, status and students.
