Les réflexions du photographe polonais Boleslas Matuszewski sur la nécessité de créer des dépôts de bandes filmiques pour nourrir le travail des historiens et l’entreprise de collecte et de valorisation de la production cinématographique Lumière sont contemporaines. Ces deux démarches se sont nourries des débats qui ont présidé à la création des musées de photographies documentaires. Retrouver les traces de cette « tutelle » dans les deux projets permet de mettre en exergue leurs possibles points de rencontre. Ces proximités sont à placer dans la généalogie des encyclopédies visuelles documentaires telles que les développèrent les sociétés Gaumont ou Pathé frères, puis Pathé Cinéma à partir des années 1910.
