Canada’s Economy and Government Policies in the Times of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic was registered in the central regions of Canada in mid-March 2020. As was agreed between the federal government and the provinces, the latter in cooperation with municipalities are responsible for defining and implementing the necessary restrictions aimed at combating pandemic and regulating a gradual re-opening of the economy after the strict quarantine is over. At the same time, the central government took most of the financial and organizational responsibility for actions to support individuals and businesses affected by COVID-19. The author looks at the changes in economic situation in Canada in the first half of the 2020 as the evolving global pandemic crisis has been shutting down many industries and disrupting the transnational supply chains. Then follows an overview of the most recent forecasts of the depth and length of recession as well as the possible timing and pace of economic recovery in Canada. The concluding part of the article analyzes the contents and the initial economic, social, and financial implications of a host of the federal aid programs included in Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan.
