Abstract
O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar os efeitos da toxina botulínica (TXB) no tratamento odontológico, assunto esse que vem sendo estudado na literatura cientifica atual. Por apresentar diferentes taxonomias e aspectos diagnósticos, existe uma dificuldade em determinar uma padronização aceitável de diagnóstico odontológico. Resultados de estudos mostraram que aplicações intramusculares de BTX-A é um tratamento efetivo para uma variedade de desordens de movimento, pois, inibe a liberação exocitótica da acetilcolina nos terminais nervosos motores levando a uma diminuição da contração muscular. A toxina tornou-se útil, tanto em tratamentos clínicos e terapeuticamente, pois contribui para uma série de condições onde existe excesso de contração muscular. Com os avanços científicos, no ramo da Odontologia ficou constatado que o bruxismo é causado por altos níveis de atividade motora na musculatura da mandíbula centralmente mediada, indicando que a redução da atividade muscular induzida pelo uso da BTX-A pode ser benéfica para o tratamento destes casos dentre outros diagnósticos.
