Lysogeny is a widespread occurrence in bacteria and represents a highly co-evolved adaptive
\nstate between bacteriophages and their hosts. Different lysogenic conversion phenomena have
\nbeen described for various bacterial species. This review outlines recent progress on the molecular analysis of bacteriophage lysogenic conversion, immunity systems, temperate phageencoded phage resistance, as well as transduction. Since phage-host interactions in lactic acid
\nbacteria (LAB) are commercially relevant and have received a lot of scientific attention in recent
\nyears, a special focus will be given to the impact of lysogeny in LAB.
