Chaque volume de la collection « Poètes d’aujourd’hui », créée en 1944 par Pierre Seghers, comprend, de manière systématique, un essai critique et biographique, un choix de textes ou une anthologie, une biographie ou chronologie, une bibliographie des oeuvres de l’auteur et des études dont elles font l’objet et, enfin, un ensemble d’illustrations. Parmi les genres critiques en présence, l’anthologie (ou choix de textes) apparaît comme un élément d’autant plus difficile à saisir qu’elle met en abyme le fonctionnement de la collection de monographies au sein de laquelle elle est composée. Se pencher sur la nature et les fonctions de ce genre critique dans la collection « Poètes d’aujourd’hui » des éditions Seghers, c’est en effet en même temps s’interroger sur les objectifs de la collection elle-même. Cependant, alors que le genre biographique est régulièrement mis en question et rejeté dans l’essai critique, le genre anthologique n’est que très rarement discuté par les auteurs des volumes. Pourquoi ce silence ? Quel est le rôle qui est explicitement donné à l’anthologie, quel est celui qu’elle joue implicitement ? S’il est évident que l’anthologie est au coeur du projet éditorial de la collection, on peut s’étonner du positionnement a-critique de l’éditeur et des auteurs dans cette section des ouvrages ; on ne peut en comprendre le fonctionnement qu’en interrogeant la dimension anthologique de la collection elle-même.
