Abstract
La chasse au phoque du Groenland par les Essipiunnuat de la Première Nation des Innus d’Essipit est une chasse traditionnelle et séculaire, ancrée profondément dans les activités innu aitun de la communauté. Cette tradition est cependant identifiée culturellement en péril par le conseil de bande et la plupart de ses membres. Cet article fait la description ethnographique de la chasse au loup-marin telle qu’elle est pratiquée aujourd’hui à Essipit, et notamment depuis la fin de la chasse commerciale dans la région des Escoumins, au début des années 2000. Il replace cette tradition dans le contexte évolutif de tout patrimoine immatériel et fait part de la vision intrinsèque dont les porteurs de cette tradition envisagent, à court et à long terme, la sauvegarde de cette chasse dans leur communauté.
