La revisión de la literatura muestra que las nuevas expectativas y los desafíos a los que se enfrentan las sociedades y economías sitúan a la educación en el centro del debate y a los docentes como actores clave. En este escenario, los responsables educativos enfrentan el reto constante de disponer de un número suficiente de docentes que sean competentes, que permanezcan motivados y que tengan condiciones laborales adecuadas durante toda su carrera profesional. Para avanzar en la búsqueda de soluciones, la autora plantea que es necesario fortalecer en América Latina tanto la formación docente como el desarrollo profesional continuo.
