Abstract
Cet article cherche à montrer comment s’inscrit la figuration de la métamorphose animale dans quelques contes de Madame d’Aulnoy (1650-1705), telle qu’elle se présente sur les planches commandées à Clément-Pierre Marillier (1740-1808) pour l’anthologie du Cabinet des fées, éditée entre 1785 et 1789. Plus précisément, l’auteur de cet article se concentre sur deux dessins qui renvoient à la sous-catégorie du « fiancé-animal » — « Serpentin Vert » et « Le Prince Marcassin » — pour proposer l’idée suivant laquelle le dessinateur procède à une « traduction » modifiant la trajectoire du texte, axée sur une érotisation qui convoque tant l’implicite que l’explicite. Marillier se retrouverait ainsi à répéter par le biais de l’image le même processus subversif qui caractérisait l’écriture de Madame d’Aulnoy, tout en s’inscrivant dans une esthétique plus globale de la série illustrée caractérisée, à la fin du xviiie siècle, par la volonté de susciter l’émotion du lecteur en faisant appel à sa sensibilité.
