Abstract
Este artigo tece uma serie de consideracoes sobre o surgimento da escrita copta e como esta estava relacionada a expansao do cristianismo no Egito. A medida que o cristianismo expandia-se no Egito, gracas em grande parte as possibilidades de expansao proporcionadas pela propria lingua copta, ocorriam transformacoes sociais consideraveis. A mais notavel dessas transformacoes surgiu com o advento do monasticismo, intimamente ligado ao desenvolvimento do cristianismo no Egito, bem como a difusao da escrita copta. O monasticismo fez surgir no Egito, e posteriormente em toda cristandade, um novo modo de vida, operando transformacoes sociais importantissimas.
