Abstract
<p dir="ltr">This article measures black carbon from wood smoke during traditional cultural activities in Fort Albany First Nation, a subarctic Cree community on James Bay. The study examined black carbon levels in a game-smoking tent and in hunting cabins where wood was burned for heating, cooking, food flavouring, and preservation. Black carbon levels were generally lower in hunting cabins with vented wood-burning appliances but were much higher during some periods in the game-smoking tent, especially when fires were started, stoked, or loaded. A propane-heater intervention reduced measured black carbon in one hunting cabin, although it was not fully practical for cold remote conditions and did not replace the broader uses of wood stoves in camp life.</p>
