Abstract
Gender and language are powerfully connected in the lives of all peoples. The emergence of the field developed with anthological and linguistic considerations. Feminism has greatly added to the field of gender and language study, though anthropology in particular has been a prime foundational contributor. Studies from around the world and in dramatically different contexts seem to reveal gender (i.e., performances of femininity and masculinity) as a performance that is enacted in speech. The way people talk both reflects and reinforces gender roles; hence, changing language use has the potential to change attitudes and behaviors concerning perceptions of gender.
