Créées par Albert Kahn, les Archives de la planète s’inscrivent au cœur d’une époque complexe, charnière entre deux siècles, aux références multiples. Derrière une homogénéité des supports (plus d’une centaine d’heures de film et près de 72 000 autochromes), cette documentation visuelle présente une réelle hétérogénéité, croisant différentes disciplines, influences, relations à l’ailleurs ou types de récits. De même, le contexte de diffusion du temps d’Albert Kahn oscille entre formation des élites, action de propagande et programme archivistique. Cet article cherche à analyser les usages actuels du fonds à la lumière de son histoire, entre simple réservoir documentaire, appropriations mémorielles et projet historiographique.
