Het doel van deze technische haalbaarheidsstudie is de ontwikkeling van duurzame valorisatie ketens voor lignocellulose rijke biomassastromen op basis van geselecteerde veelbelovende business cases. Daartoe is onderzocht in hoeverre regionaal beschikbare biomassa binnen de provincie Gelderland als grondstof kunnen dienen voor de Biobased Economy. Een zestal cases zijn beschreven waarbij er een duidelijke marktvraag ligt of grondstof beschikbaar is voor (alternatieve) toepassingen. Naast een algemene analyse van beschikbare regionale biomassastromen is per case beschreven wat de aanleiding is, de beschikbaarheid van de (bij voorkeur) regionale biomassastromen, het ontwerp van de waardeketen en processen, potentiele regionale marktoutlets voor biobased producten en energie, en potentiele knelpunten voor ketenontwikkeling/-implementatie. Ook is voor elke case een SWOT analyse uitgevoerd en een Canvas business case opgezet. Deze business cases zullen daar waar mogelijk binnen het innovatieprogramma BIC-ON verder worden uitgewerkt tot business plannen. Bij de start en tijdens de uitvoering van het project heeft het projectteam besloten de nadruk in eerste instantie te leggen op de definitie en ontwikkeling van een aantal regionale business cases die van direct belang zijn voor de in het consortium participerende marktpartijen en zodoende eventueel laaghangend fruit te kunnen oogsten en derhalve de korte-termijn marktimplementatie te bevorderen. Daarnaast is een meer generieke analyse gemaakt van mogelijke valorisatieopties voor lignocellulose biomassa voor de korte (< 2 jaar) en langere termijn (>2 jaar). Meer generiek zijn voor de valorisatie van lignocellulose biomassa een aantal technische en niet-technische knelpunten geïdentificeerd en zijn potentiële oplossingsrichtingen, inclusief noodzakelijke R&D voor de ontwikkeling van een aantal sleuteltechnologieën, gespecificeerd. Deze korte en langere-termijn R&D aspecten zullen nader worden geadresseerd in de pijler Natuurvezels van het BioEconomy Innovation Cluster – Oost Nederland (BIC-ON).
