Abstract
Background - Celiac disease is a T-cell mediated type IV hypersensitivity reaction to gluten in an at-risk population resulting in intestinal damage, and associated villous atrophy. CYP450 3A4 is constitutively expressed in human intestinal villi and accounts for significant first-pass prehepatic metabolism of many drugs, including dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers. Previous studies showed that patients with celiac disease have low intestinal CYP450 3A4 immunoreactivity and treatment with gluten-free diet is associated with increased CYP450 3A4 immunoreactive protein.
