Estima-se que, em 2050, o mundo tenha mais do que dois terços da população vivendo em áreas urbanas. A sobrevivência da vida urbana depende do desenvolvimento de políticas públicas integradas às práticas de planejamento urbano capazes de produzir cidades mais sustentáveis. A partir da medição da caminhabilidade em uma área, em recorte, da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, utilizando-se a metodologia do Instituto de Políticas de Transporte e Desenvolvimento (ITDP), o presente estudo tem como objetivo identificar, discutir e propor ações de requalificação do espaço urbano a partir da ótica do pedestre. Foram identificadas deficiências relacionadas às travessias, iluminação, segurança viária, dimensão das quadras e pavimentação das calçadas. A partir dos resultados obtidos, propõe-se a criação de parklets, adoção de travessias diagonais, pontos de iluminação voltados para as travessias e adequação da velocidade regulamentada. As propostas dialogam diretamente com as demandas da sociedade contemporânea, que, através de um planejamento urbano voltado para as pessoas, pretende promover locais mais seguros, vibrantes, saudáveis e sustentáveis, incentivando os deslocamentos a pé.
