Abstract

O presente artigo discute a instauração no âmbito da Província do Pará dos núcleos agrícolas na região bragantina nas últimas décadas do século XIX. Através de pesquisas realizadas com as mensagens dos presidentes de província, no Arquivo Público do Estado do Pará e do Arquivo e no Arquivo Público Municipal de Bragança (PA), observamos a execução do projeto de substituição de mão de obra e de colonização do território no nordeste paraense. Apresentamos como a definição dos núcleos e vilas relacionou-se com a criação da Estrada de Ferro Belém-Bragança e com as demandas de abastecimento da capital no contexto da economia gomífera na Amazônia.
